Media silent over payouts to victims of Gardasil

 You can be excused for not knowing that the U.S. National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP) has recently paid out nearly $6 million in claims to victims of controversial HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccine because our mainstream media is not doing its job.

In April 2013,  the Washington based Judicial Watch announced that it had received documents from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) revealing that its National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP) has awarded $5,877,710 dollars to 49 victims in claims made against the highly controversial HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccines. To date 200 claims have been filed with VICP, with barely half adjudicated. There is a real problem here with a vaccine that is still being heavily promoted to young girls, women, and now boys.

Where is our mainstream press when you need them? They were more than happy to spruik the vaccine when it was developed and marketed in 2007. It is here in Australia that the co-inventor of the HPV vaccine Professor Ian Frazer lives and works. He was the Australian of the Year in 2006 largely for his work on vaccines and in particular the cervical cancer vaccine. I remember the promotion of Gardasil which first began around 2005. At that time I wrote an article which was published on the online website New Matilda.com where I said ‘that there is no evidence of a direct, causal relationship between HPV and cervical cancer and that half the adult population is infected with HPV yet only 1 per cent of women develop the cancer.’ I then suggested that since HPV infection is short lived and there is no proof that it causes cervical cancer anyway, that a vaccine was not necessary and that pap smears would suffice.

Fear of cervical cancer was at the forefront of this campaign frightening parents and young women into HPV vaccination. The promotion was successful and the free vaccination program began even  though the rates of cervical cancer were and are very small in western developed nations. An Australian Government cancer website reports: “Cervical cancer is uncommon. About 734 Australian women, or about seven women in every 100,000, are newly diagnosed with cervical cancer each year. Since the introduction of the National Cervical Screening Program in 1991, the number of new cases of cervical cancer for women of all ages almost halved to 2005, and mortality also halved from 1991 to 200.” There are around 200 deaths from cervical cancer each year and these are mostly elderly women so why create fear among parents and young women in regard to this rare cancer.

A report by the Business Media,  a unit of the U.S. conservative watchdog group Media Research Center found that the hype about Gardasil wasn’t the result of over-the-top marketing by manufacturer Merck, it claims, but instead the result of heavy promotion by the American news media. Similar promotion by the Australian media was notable with many interviews and stories featuring Professor Ian Frazer and other scientists and doctors all supportive of the HPV vaccination program. Elisabeth Rosenthal discusses the award – winning advertising of the HPV vaccines and how before the film “Sex and the City,” some moviegoers in the United States saw ads for Gardasil and in advertisements on popular shows like “Law and Order,” a multiethnic cast of young professionals urges girls to become “one less statistic” by getting vaccinated. Rosenthal describes how vaccine manufacturers provided money for activities by patients and women’s groups, doctors and medical experts, lobbyists and political organizations interested in the disease.

Worldwide sales of gardasil for 2011 were $1.2 billion, a 22 percent increase compared with the prior year. It is really alarming that there is this media silence about Gardasil and the unnecessary sickness and deaths that have followed its administration.  Australia’s database of adverse event notifications (DAEN) has recorded over 1991 suspected side effects following the cervical cancer vaccination. In the U.S. the total number of adverse effects stands now at 30,000, with 138 deaths and 5977 girls and young women whose health never recovered. Due to the lack of mandatory reporting, only between 1 per cent and 10 per cent of adverse reactions are ever recorded, so unfortunately we are really looking at much higher figures.

On June 14, the Japanese Health Ministry issued a nationwide notice that the so-called ‘cervical cancer’ vaccinations should not be recommended for girls aged 12 to 16. This precautionary move followed reports of 1,968 cases of possible adverse effects including body pain, numbness and paralysis. However this profound development and course of action taken by the Japanese health department was not to be seen anywhere on Australia’s TV’s or in our daily papers.

What causes this conspiracy of silence? The public has a right to know what is going on.

Is it all about profits? Is it about defending vaccination policy? Are the health departments afraid to admit error ?
